WCNCS — Kindergarten
The kindergarten class is designed for children five years of age by September 1st of the current school year.
Our kindergarten class is a structured setting that enhances learning. Readiness skills for reading are introduced and practiced. We are currently using the Houghton Mifflin reading series Invitations to Literacy, which incorporates phonemic awareness, phonics, concepts of print, oral language skills, and high-frequency vocabulary words. The students enjoy learning skills through Big Books and child size storybooks that accompany the reading material. The children will be introduced to writing skills through the process approach to writing, as well as the Wonder of Words Literacy Activity workbook. Listening, communicating, reading readiness and writing make this approach complete.
The children are using a manipulative approach to their mathematics. We are currently using a series by Silver, Burdett and Ginn. They study numbers, number sets, counting skills, ordinal number skills as well as pre-addition and pre-subtraction concepts. They are introduced to the concepts of time, money and graphing. This classroom also has computers that allow the children to work at their own pace while learning through age-appropriate software.
A hands-on science curriculum has been developed by the teacher to involve the students in experiments, discussion and predicting. Units are taught throughout the year and integrated into other curricular areas.
The children celebrate holidays and seasonal changes. Music and hands-on creative arts are part of the curriculum on a daily basis. Two highlights of the year are the One Hundred Day Celebration, celebrating 100 Days of Kindergarten and the Student of the Week which emphasizes the unique and special qualities of each individual student.
Our kindergarten students enjoy the socialization of the class. Structured freeplay and social interaction is stressed, along with an outdoor recess time. Learning to cooperate with classmates and taking turns is always part of the day.
The kindergarten class at the West Chester Nazarene Christian School has a very special atmosphere. The low teacher-to-student ratio enables the teacher to spend individual time with each child. Field trips and special assemblies also make this program unique. Our kindergarten students are very well prepared to go on to a new situation after graduation.
